Drum Mixers Drum mixers are gallon drums that rotate in order to mix chemicals and materials such as gravel and cement. Drum mixers are a broad category of mixers with many variations. For example, portable drum mixers are one type of drum mixer which may be used for in-container mixing. Other drum mixers have their own container into which materials must be poured.

What Is a Drum Mixer?

Besides the mixing mechanism, other processes included are preparing and discharging the concrete mixture. Therefore, drum mixers are found in different configurations depending on the application.

A drum mixer uses a paddle with a number of blades that curve in different directions. This mechanism is known as a swing blade paddle. The swing blade paddle's design allows maximum movement of the liquid within the rotating drum, reducing the time spent on mixing.

How Drum Mixers Function

Drum mixers are powered by electric or pneumatic motors. These mixers can mix substances of different particle sizes, including gravel, fruit, ice cream, and even cement slurry.

Internal paddles and a sturdy frame do the job of supporting the drum as it rotates or tumbles. Drum mixers are categorized as batch mixers because they function with one batch at a time.

Types of Drum Mixers

There are various types of drum mixers, including the tilting drum mixer, non-tilting drum mixer, and reverse drum mixer.

Tilting Drum Mixer

This type of drum mixer mixes the contained ingredients while it rotates forward and discharges while reversing the motion of the concrete mixer drum. The tilting drum mixer is usually used to blend semi-dry concrete and plastic.

Tilting Drum Mixer

Some of the advantages of a tilting drum mixer are its stable operation, high working efficiency, low noise, high productivity, high quality, and convenient movement. The tilting drum concrete mixer is, in most cases, used in the construction of roads, bridges, and water and electrical engineering. This drum mixer discharges concrete from the drum by tilting downwards.

Tilting drum mixers are used for huge projects and are also suitable for quickly discharging products. The mixing efficiency of a tilting drum mixer depends on factors including the size of the blade, angle of the blades, and shape of the drum.

Non-Tilting Drum Mixer

Non-tilting drum mixers work by mixing the mixture without tilting it. Instead, the drum rotates about the horizontal axis in order to mix and produce concrete. These mixers consist of openings on both ends. The ingredients needed for the production of the mix are inserted on one end and collected from the other.

Non-Tilting Drum Mixer

These mixers consist of openings on both their ends. The ingredients that are needed for the production of the mix are inserted from one end and the collection of the contained mix is done on the other end.

The end mix is obtained by attaching a chute to the opening of the drum. If the mixer needs to discharge, the chute is placed on an incline to retrieve the concrete mixture from the discharging drum. In the extraction process, the blades contained by this mixer also work as an aid.

Reverse Drum Mixer

This type of drum mixer is responsible for producing concrete in single batches. The entire contained drum rotates about its axis. Materials are loaded into the reverse drum mixer through a charge chute found at the opposite end of the drum.

Reverse Drum Mixer

The reverse drum mixer has a drum that contains two openings used for keeping the ingredients and discharging the mix.

Applications and Uses of Drum Mixers

Drum mixers are utilized in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. In these industries, they are used to mix medicinal powders and other forms of chemicals. They are also used to blend mixtures such as cement and adhesive slurries. Other industries that utilize drum mixers include the food and beverage, cosmetic, and agricultural industry.
